Sankar Sridhar

Sankar SridharSridhar developed a head for heights as a teenager in Calcutta while climbing stairs, first to peddle pagers and then trousers. The exercise – skipping lunch, mounting steps and dashing down to outrun irate housewives – stood him in good stead when he finally swapped concrete staircases for the icy Himalayas. A photographer and travel writer, Sridhar has today travelled across wide swaths of the country to document its landscapes and people.  His enduring personal project has been to document the lives of pastoralists, especially the people who call the high Himalayas their home. His works – both photographic and editorial – have been published, among others, by CNN International, Royal Geographical Society’s Geographical, Action Asia, Adventure Travel Magazine UK, Le Courrier France, Le Courrier International Japon, Geo, Financial Times, The Telegraph, The Statesman, The Times of India, DNA, Mail Today, India Today Travel Plus, Outlook Traveller and the in-flight magazines Swagat, Jetwings and Namaskarand journals such as The Himalayan Journal and Indian Mountaineer.trance_himalaya Chasing Nyima, Sridhar’s essay on his time with the nomads of Ladakh, found a distinctive place in Penguin’s third edition of First Proof, an anthology of New Indian Writing. It was lauded by critics as “lyrical” and “unforgettable”. His first book, Ladakh Trance Himalaya , a visual travelogue spanning a decade of trekking though the region, was dubbed a “feast for the eyes”, “an experience far out of the normal” and “a celebration of adventure”. His images have been featured on the Nikon Calendar in 2010 and 2012, and in the 2013 WWF calendar Himalayan Raphsody. His photographs also received awards and honourable mentions at national and international salons and contests.
