Nothing stays hidden from Googlemaps’ all-seeing eye -- not even on a route in Garhwal’s Dev Bhoomi that Shiva himself carefully concealed. The God had ordered Neelkanth to rise, and sprinkled high fields of snow and crevassed ice to make a crossing between Badrinath and Kedarnath impossible.
It was this legend that, in 1934, drew Shipton and Tilman to explore the area. They, and other explorers much after them, failed to find a route through the mountains. Some were never heard of again.
Panpatia and Parvati, the two 5000-metre passes guarding the route, kept their secrets well up to 2000, when Martin Moran and his team claimed the first successful crossing. Success for Indians came in 2007, courtesy Debu da and Googlemaps. Five years after that, we walked the route from Badrinath, and over the passes, to Ransi.
