Journey with the gaddi
As nights stretch longer, the sun mellows, and the landscape grows partial to white, a scene of exodus unfolds across the higher lands of Himachal Pradesh. Fattened by summer’s grazing and shepherded by the pastoral Gaddis, goats, sheep, kids, horses and foals begin a long march to hamlets ensconced in lower hills and more merciful climes. Some Gaddis claim the journey, fraught with the risk of wild changes in weather and bear attacks, speeds them on their way. But most give credit to a hidden reward — the prospect of returning home to family.
